View Full Version : Assasin Snails v. Mystery Snails

I used to visit more often but started my first year as a teacher so I got really busy. Last week I bought two mystery snails to assist with algae and I think they are systematically murdering my Assasin snails. The person at the LFS Sao they would be fine (but I don't believe her). That's why I'm here.
5 gallon, fresh water, two guppies, live plants, two mystery and (now) two Assasin snails.

Any help would be appreciated! http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/25/9fab180d8a548204222370b3294cb8b8.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/25/a1f483154623c3129bebc985c2371cd4.jpg

Highly unlikely that Mystery snails will hurt or kill assassins. Maybe the other way around if the Mystery snails are still small. Did you find empty assassin snail shells or are you just missing them? If you just cannot find them, I am sure they are still there as they totally bury into the substrate at times.

I see an empty assassin snail shell in one of the pics. But like Gardfieldnfish said, it was not directly from the mystery snails. The mysterys are not predatory, so if anything, the assassins would be munching on them. My guess is that after a while, the assassins took out all of the other snail populations and began to run out of food. So lately they had been eating algae, detritus, etc. (regular snail food). When you put the more efficient mystery snails in, they probably began to outcompete the assassin snails for food. You would think that the assassins might try to "take out the competition", but in my experience they generally leave the larger mystery snails alone.
So in conclusion, your assassins may have run out of food. You may think about going to a LFS to get their pest snails in order to feed your assassins.
