I was wondering if anyone has trick to help or of it's a start of a failure on my canister propeller. My Fluval 406 is propeller is rattling and I have cleaned the propeller and it's housing area, which didn't stop it. I also use petroleum jelly around the magnet and on part it connects to. I also check all seals or the hoses for any damage and there wasn't any at all. What is y'all thoughts on this?

I should add that there's no air bubbles coming from the return line, hoses, or from the canister itself and no water leaks what so ever. It's running and cycling the water fine without any other issues besides this rattling.

I know my 403 pretty much had a perpetual rattle from the impeller. Could just be eventual wear occurring causing the tolerances to loosen up.

Any wear on the magnet or the little rubber thing on the end of the shaft can cause rattling as can a bend shaft, also wear of the well caused by a rock or carbon or sand in there when its running. The shaft alone is cheaper than the magnet, so I'd replace that first.

If the parts are wearing down physically it may no longer be balancing the shaft correctly while the filter motor runs. I would check for replacement parts if anything has scratches, isn't straight, or isn't symmetrical.

Replaced the Ceramic Shaft on my fluval 406 from a 306, that I had sitting around. The rattling went away, thanks for the info it helped.
