I put some Seachem Acid Buffer in a bag in my filter. It all went out. The ph dropped from 7.8 to 6.The fish went up to the top. I changed the water again and refilled the canister filter. Added more API stress coat. Most have come down and seem to be recuperating.

Is is the drop of ph that affects them?

In fish that are not tolerant of a low pH or fish that experience a sudden drop in pH, the increased acidity effects the regulation of ion transporters in the gills causing an osmotic imbalance. Also, the acidity can be an irritant that causes increased mucus on and around the gills leading to suffocation. This isn't your case, but very low acidity levels can cause the gills to degrade in fish that aren't tolerant.

The fish were Von Rio Tetra. Looks like I will be left with 1 out 10

Thanks! That explains why they became imbalance before they died.
