View Full Version : Moss ID (ATTN: anyone who bought Xmas moss at the Spring Auction)

I thought I was selling Xmas moss back at the Spring auction. Turns out I have Taiwan Moss, not Xmas moss. Both have triangular fronds so this is a common mistake, apparently. I recently became suspicious and after comparing my moss to lots of detailed images online and even breaking out the microscope, I could definitely tell that my moss is a Taxiphyllum (the same as Java moss), not Vesicularia like Xmas moss. I contacted the guy I originally bought the moss from, who confirmed that there was likely a mixup as he also kept Taiwan moss.

So, there you go! Moss identification is tricky and misidentification is a frequent occurrence (In fact, both moss purchases I've made in the past year were misidentified-- the Flame moss I purchased at the club auction was actually Java).

Here are a few resources I've found useful when trying to identity moss:

And lastly for your personal enjoyment, here's an amazing moss tank:

That's a very cool thread, Jeremy. Thanks.

I don't speak Polish, though my mother's father was Polish.
Google Translate (http://translate.google.com/#), though, speaks Polish, and many other languages, very well!
Here's a link to that thread, in English (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=pl&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.holenderskie.pl%2Fforum%2Fviewt opic.php%3Ft%3D13608), via Google Translate.

All the best,
Chris

Really, the sad thing is that I have already put decorations on it, and presents under it, preparing it for the upcoming yuletide season, only to now discover it is not Christmas Moss at all. Well, don't I feel silly!

Looks a stay thread of REAL Xmas moss (well maybe Singapore-- not positive. Definitely not a Taxiphyllum species) may have hitchhiked along with the Fissidens Fontanus I just scored. Maybe this holiday season I'll be able to gather the family around the Xmas moss after all...
