View Full Version : Simultaneous expression of phenotypes in discus?

(AKA several traits showing up at the same time?)

For those genetically inclined, I have a question. I have some discus that were a result of a cross between a SantaRem female and a blue snakeskin male; most of the offspring have turned out as blue snakeskin and red turquoise. In one pair that has just formed up, the female looks to be blue snakeskin, but the male has both SantaRem AND red turquoise showing - he has the brilliant electric blue background with the red patterns throughout, and yet a wide black fringe over the dorsal & anal fins, which really shows out when he is fanning eggs. Several of the other discus from this same clutch are also showing this dual coloration.

I thought only one phenotype showed "through" at a time? I also have a mix of 14- and 9- barred fish, both with either snakeskin or red turq coloring...

Could be codominance, in which case the progeny shows a combination of the two parent phenotypes. I know next to nothing about the specifics of discus genetics though.
