Decided to start a journal on this tank since im going to take my time.
I bought this tank used from a member on the forum and was suppose to be for my girlfriend's dwarf puffer fish, but since she is happy with the 10 gallon then im going to turn it into a CRS or PFR shrimp tank.
Originally i was going to turn the tank into a Iwagumi tank , and i have some perfect rock for the job but whilst looking for the rock today i came across a great piece of driftwood that fits perfect for this tank.
The driftwood is soaking in a Vinegar/water mix at the moment, tomorrow i will soak it in a Hydrogen Peroxide bathbefore finally scrubbing it with a brush and then throwing it in the dishwasher (when my girlfriend is at work)
The tank will go through a dry start for maybe 4-5 weeks to help plants root and hopefully grow fuller

Tank: 6.6 gallon
Substrate : Brown paper at the moment ! But will change to ADA Aquasoil or Organic Potting soil capped with pool filter sand.
Lighting: LED although im unsure which one at the moment.
C02: Maybe DIY (depends on plants)
Plants: Blyxa Japonica, HC, Java Fern, Fissiden, Xmas Moss, Micro sword (all this will depend on if i use C02)

I have one of these tanks still, it's a great size. Have to be careful with it, does seem to scratch up a bit easy. Just using stock lighting, seems to be more than enough for any type of plant. About the only issue with it was the stock filter, it is kind of weak. Using a rapids mini canister with intake/outtake at opposite ends, works rather well.

Filter wise im not sure what im going to do. I have a Zoo med 501 that i never used so i may go with that. Do you think the standard light will grow HC ?

It should be able to, stock bulb is 15w I think and light doesn't have far to go, tank is only 9" height. I have microsword and a bit of dwarf sag in the tank.

Ok plants are in and waiting to grow !
I dont know what to put in the far right corner, any ideas ? At the moment i have Hygrophilia Corymbosa needle leaf but i know its going to get to big and look "clumsy" so i need thoughts.

Im not sure yet, i was hoping the HC would have spread better than it has. I guess i cant make my HC grow like you make Fissiden grow !
I added some Bacopa sp. Colorata on the right side to replace the corymbosa so when that takes a little then i may flood, probably another 2 weeks though......or until i lose patience LOL

Well its been 2 weeks and the growth has gone good so far. Im still deciding on what LED fixture to get for this tank, so until then it will stay dry :-(

The hc seems to be growing well. How often are you misting the tank?

stevenjohn21

I mist the tank 2-3 times a day if I remember lol
The HC is always moist as the water collects at the bottom, it's the stem plants I have trouble with keeping moist. I recently placed the tank in the basement under the stairs with the boiler so it keeps the humid .... Not sure if this will help , time will tell I guess.

Think over on plantedtank have read posts of folks misting the tank, then putting saran wrap over the top to keep it humid.

Its been a while since i updated this tank. I have changed it around a little as the tank is way too small to play with so many different plant species. I decided to go the easy maintenance route, so i only went with 4 plants. I had to cut a piece of the driftwood off because the Hydrocoytle was going crazy ! I was trimming it every 2 days!

Anyway here is the most recent picture, its a little cloudy due to changing the water.
