A halogen light?? I've never seen a halogen light for an aquarium. I think you should re-consider your choice. If you were use some type of halogen light over your aquarium, it would likely overheat your water. That said, what you need to look into is a double-bulb T5 flourescent setup, which are readily available, and will proved plenty of light for your aquarium.

Here is a pic of my tank with T5 HO on a 110 tall, my fixture is a 4 bulb set up. However, I am very heavily planted with co2 and dry fert.

However, since you only have a 55g, I would recommend the 2 bulb fixture, this: http://www.aquatraders.com/48-inch-2x54W-T5-Aquarium-Light-Fixture-p/52123p.htm

Also, if you need bulbs for it, Atlantis Hydroponics has a great price on T5 HO that are very reasonable in price $8.99 per bulb (6500K or 2700K). Even cheaper if you buy in bulk. Here is their website, http://www.atlantishydroponics.com/category.cfm/CurrentPage/3/atlantis/Fluorescent-Grow-Lights. They have 3 locations here in GA.

In that 4-bulb HO reflector, do you also run the little fan while the lights are on (that is, if the fixture has a fan)?
