Are they good for anything. I have been spending evenings shelling pecans. Someone gave us 25 lbs. I wonder if the shells could be used to soften water some way. Black water tonic and such is pretty expensive. What would happen if I crushed some and put them in the filter (in a mesh bag)? I don't know what pecan shells are made of?

So it turns out that they are useful for more than just making me jealous that you have so many pecans!

I would expect that you would have a lot of tannin released. Otherwise you can use the shell instead of charcoal for a BBQ.
