I may be the only guy dumb enough to set up a 55 gallon apistogramma tank but it's awesome

Very nice and I have had 55's housing smaller fish before. I look at it as less maintenance haha. Can you explaing what you used in the second pic(is that clay, mud?)

Why is setting up a 55 for apistos dumb? I think that is a cool idea! As long as you have enough of them in there and a bit of territory/ a cave for everyone the aggression shouldn't be an issue.

Cichlid behavior including most apistos is, "If I see you I will chase you, If I catch you ..ouch". Especially if spawning. There must be places to hide and escape aggression. That is usually not achieved by just wood and stones. Caves are death traps. Heavily planted with mosses and plants like water sprite work well. Exceptions are possible, however, in my numerous attempts at achieving this same goal it almost always ended with one spawning pr and numerous fish beaten or killed. Borelli seem to be one exception. The panduros I have had were aggressive.

It's black diamond sand with several clay pot saucers hidden in the scape as caves

You are right the panduros either chase or eat however all 6 were raised together I have yet to see any damaged fins so as of right now they seem to only chase each other only time will tell
