Breeding My Kribensis (Day 11 - 20)

DAY 11. . .
Today i decided to make my own fish food, a quick google search gave me a few recipes. I mixed whole shrimp with peas, spinach, zucchini some liquid multi vitamin and Spirulina powder and out came what looked like a giant booger ! I hope it tastes better than it smelt !! I poured it into some ziploc bags and placed them in the freezer. A few hours later the food was ready and dinner was about to be served. I decided to try it out on my Platys first in another tank. . . just incase ! They didnt seem thrilled about it but they did eat it. After an hour of waiting to see if the Platys were doing the back stroke or something weird i decided to let the Kribs try my master piece. I placed a piece in and straight away the Mollys & Angels went to work, the Kribs took a piece almost at the same time and did a syncronized "spit out" and again the male Krib looked at me as if "Dude !!! Are you serious???"
I decided not to give in and feed them the B.Shrimp so i walked away and left them. A few hours later i looked at the tank and as soon as they saw me they went to the surface just like they always do when i walk in the room (usually to feed them) I started feeling bad that they had not eaten anything so i threw in a few of the cichlid pellets they dont like. All i can say about todays feeding is that i now have some fat Mollys !!!! I also changed 5 gallons today and when i poured the freshwater into the tank it kicked up some of the sand and the Kribs started picking at bits that came up so im guessing they got some food today.

DAY 12. . .
I have not been looking at the Krib tank today due to an unexpected spawn from my Betta's ! I woke up this morning to serve breakfast for the fishes and noticed the Male Embracing the Female. I hadnt planned on breeding the 2 but it looks like she found a way past the plexi glass divider. The spawning has finished now (4 hours) and i would say she has produced around 150 eggs. . . . if only the Kribs would take a note out of the Betta's Kama Sutra Book ! Maybe i should change the title to "Breeding my Betta's" that way i dont have to write anything else apart from "The End"
Tonight i have noticed the "Mountain" of sand a lot higher than it has been, it gradually flattened throughout the week due to water changes and filter movement, but im happy to say they have been working hard the last few hours. Exactly 1 week ago i spotted their eggs, i cant help but think that had they not eaten their last batch i would have free swimming baby kribs now . . . . my fingers are crossed they know what their doing this time around.

DAY 13. . .
One of the amazon swords that was planted next to the "Mountain" was floating at the surface this morning. As i was re planting it i noticed where the Tee sweeps into a "V" shape the Female came out from under it. They have managed to burrow their way about 5-6" under the Tee and out the other side. This is now looking like their chosen love cave, which is a shame because it means i wont be able to get a picture of the Eggs. The Female looks ready and seems a lot bigger than before so im expecting a bigger spawn this time. I do feel they she is about to drop at anytime now, so i have given up trying different foods and have stuck to what i know they love. . . . .B.Shrimp. I did recieve my Microworm culture today which came at a great time especially with me about to have what looks now like around 30-50 baby Bettas. (I think someone got hungry last night) I should be expecting to see tiny tails sticking out from the eggs within the next 24 hours.

DAY 14. . .
Both kribs have become more aggressive today. They dont nip but they are chasing the Mollys up to the surface, although they are leaving the 2 juvenile angels alone. The Female Krib is about to burst she is so chubby, im hoping within the next 24 hours she will be finding a spot for her eggs. The Betta fry are doing good, they can swim up to the bubblenest on their own now but dont seem to be able to swim horizontal just yet. Some are on the bottom of the tank and wiggling around so i dont know if they are going to make it. . . . which wont upset me to be honest because my initial 30-50 fry estimation actually looks like 300 fry ! The eggs must have been packed together really tightly.

DAY 15. . .
The female Krib does not seem to be moving very much she is just out in the open sifting through the sand, i would be concerned if she wasnt pregnant. The Male is making sure the Mollys stay at the top of the tank but again he is not nipping even when he catches up to them. The Angel fish are still allowed at the bottom half of the tank but i can tell its bothering the Male slightly. The Betta fry are now free swimming and the male has been taken out. They are too small to try and count but i will keep you updated.

DAY 16. . .
Its been a boring day today, nothing to report really. The female wasnt showing signs of her bright yellow stripes this morning but as soon as she had eaten B.Shrimp she was glowing and full of color again.

DAY 17. . .
I fed the Kribs peas this morning, i heard it flushes out their system so decided to try. They seemed to enjoy the peas but it is a little messy as i had to squeeze the pea from its shell so they can get to the mushy bit inside. Tomorrow marks 2 weeks since they last spawned which is how long they took last time so im getting ready for the female to burst anytime now as her belly is huge.

DAY 18. . .
Its their 2 week anniversary today from when they last spawned and i was a little dissapointed when i got home from work to find out that she was still fat ! I have fed them chopped up live black trout worms which they loved ! Im not sure how good they are for them, i have a feeling not very nutrcious since they like them so much ! It was a little treat since i thought i would see eggs but it wasnt meant to be. The Betta fry are doing well although they are still too small to count but im going to place them in a smaller tank this weekend so i can hopefully get a count.

DAY 19. . .
The female didnt come out for breakfast this morning and when i looked around the tank i saw her inside her PVC pipe, thinking she had eggs with her i left alone and at 4pm went in to feed them B. Shrimp only to find her swimming around and still fat !!! She must have just slept in this morning ! Im sorry this blog is not over with but now i have started it i may aswell finish it.

DAY 20. . .
Today i took out the Mollys & Platys in the hope that now there are only 2 slow moving angels in the tank the Kribs will feel that the eggs will be safer and they wont have to be too busy chasing off "enemies" She is so fat now that i cant believe she has not released the eggs yet.
